Fun Run 2009 # 1

Fun Run 2009 # 1

Runners of all ages and abilities are invited to dig out their trainers and come along and take part in this year’s Ambergate Fun Runs and Family Sports Day.

The events are being held on Sunday 4 July to mark the beginning of Ambergate Carnival Week.

The ‘Up and Down’ race takes runners up into Shining Cliff Woods and back again, while the ‘Round and Round’ race, for the very young and less fit, takes a flatter and altogether less demanding route. Both races start from The Hurt Arms pub on the A6 in Ambergate at 1pm.

Kate Pierce, Chair of the Ambergate Carnival Committee, said: “The Up and Down has always been popular over the years, with fierce competition for the honour of being first to cross the finishing line. Unfortunately the bad weather in recent summers has reduced the enthusiasm and number of entries, and the future of the run is under threat. This will be the 20th year we’ve held the Up and Down, and it would be such a shame if it were the last. We hope lots of people will come along and support the fun runs and help keep this long-standing Ambergate tradition alive!”

After the medal presentations and lunch – hot food will be provided on site, or bring a picnic – the Family Sports Day begins at 2pm, with a host of school sports activities and races for both kids and big kids alike!

Dog Show 2009

Dog Show 2009

And for those who prefer to spend their afternoon at a more leisurely pace, why not come along to the Carnival Dog Show, a fun event for dogs and their owners to show off their canine talents! The Show begins at 2pm; for more information contact Claire on 01773 856950.

Marshalls are vital to the success of the fun runs and Sports Day, and more volunteers to help at the events are always needed. If you can help, or would like to find out more about the day’s events, please ring 01773 856785.

All the fun of the circus is coming to this year’s Ambergate Carnival!

Dan Collins in ActionAnd visitors will not only be able watch the circus acts – they will also get the chance to try their hand at learning some of the amazing circus skills on display!

Ambergate Carnival is taking place on Saturday 10th July at The Hurt Arms Carnival Showground, Derby Road, Ambergate (on the A6 / A610 junction). The circus-themed procession is due to leave the Recreation Ground at 1.30pm.

During the afternoon visitors will be able to enjoy performances by the Dan Collins Suitcase Circus. “The most dextrous man in the business” will be wowing the crowds with his displays of unicycling, diabolo and juggling.

People can also take part in Deluxe Circus Workshops, run by ‘The Joker’, offering a wide range of fantastic activities for all the family to enjoy. Performers will be on hand to provide expert tuition to help everyone master the circus skills.

Kate Pierce, Chair of the Ambergate Carnival Committee said: “The workshops offer something for everyone, from toddlers to teenagers to grandparents! We hope lots of people will come along and have a go at the activities on offer, which include juggling, diabolo and plate spinning. You can also learn the art of balloon modelling – and even take home your creations! And for the more adventurous, this could be your big chance to try some more advanced circus tricks, such as unicycling and stilt walking. It promises to be a fun and memorable afternoon for all the family to enjoy.”

Elsewhere on the Carnival Showground there will be a host of stalls, sideshows and attractions, including electric go-karts, a bouncy castle and inflatable slide, have-a-go archery, and displays by the Long Eaton Militaries and Ripley Morris Men, plus lots more.

The fun is set to continue well into the evening, with live music provided by The Beatroot Beatles and The S.U.B.S at the Carnival After Party, held in the Carnival Marquee at the Hurt Arms. Tickets, costing £5, can be bought in advance from Chris by calling 01773 853571.

This will be followed by the Carnival Fun Run, which gets underway at 1pm, and the Carnival Dog Show and Sports Day, which begin at 2pm.
